Solihull businessman provides practical support for homeless charity

A Solihull business owner will brave the elements by sleeping outdoors to raise awareness and funds for a charity that supports young homeless people.

Elliott Robinson, owner of oven cleaning firm Ovenu Solihull, has signed up for the Big Birmingham Sleepout in November, where participants are challenged to build shelters from cardboard and plastic sheeting before sleeping in them to experience the conditions faced by many homeless people.

The fundraising event, held in the grounds of Birmingham Cathedral, is organised by St Basils, a city-based charity that works with young people aged 16 to 25 who are homeless or are at risk of becoming homeless.

However, his support for St Basils hasn’t stopped there, as he has also offered the charity the use of his van and his time for a day, as well as helping distribute the charity’s promotional leaflets.

Elliott said: “St Basils provides an essential service to support and help vulnerable members of society, not only by arranging a roof over their heads, but also developing the life skills necessary to forging a better future.”

The charity provides a full range of prevention, accommodation, support and engagement services as well as services to ensure young people develop the skills to move on successfully,

It organises the Big Birmingham SleepOut each year to raise money and awareness for the charity, which houses more than 1,000 people in Birmingham and more than 1,500 across the West Midlands throughout its 34 supported accommodation schemes. It also helps thousands more with face-to-face advice and support.

Elliott has been an Ovenu franchisee since 2007, covering an area including Olton, Dickens Heath, Shirley, Dorridge, Hillfields, Tidbury Green, Chelmsley Wood, Elmdon, Meriden, Balsall Common and beyond.

Rik Hellewell, Founder and Managing Director of Ovenu, added: “We encourage our franchisees to give something back to the community. It is great to see Elliott supporting such a worthwhile cause.”

Ovenu is a franchise network made up of more than 100 businesses owned by men and women throughout the UK.

The Ovenu valeting process involves dismantling key components of an oven such as the door, interior panels, fan and shelves and placing them into design-registered tank equipment, which uses safe, non-caustic products to clean the oven parts. The whole process takes around three to four hours and leaves the oven, hob and exterior in immaculate condition.

Elliott, who will sleep out in aid of the charity on November 29, has set up a Just Giving page. To donate, visit https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/Sharon-Robinson43
