Bradford store chosen as location for shoe amnesty

A shoe store in The Broadway is offering to trade in old and unwanted shoes from shoppers in Bradford, as part of its bid to support the UKs leading childrens disability charity.

schuh is calling on local people to dig out every pair of unwanted shoes from the back of their wardrobes and deliver them to a drop off point in The Broadway store. In return, schuh will give donors a £10 voucher for every pair.

Discarded shoes will then be passed on to Newlife the Charity for Disabled Children, which recycles them to raise money to support disabled and terminally ill children across the UK.

Elizabeth Peacock, store manager at schuh within The Broadway, says: ‘This is a great opportunity to simultaneously clear out your wardrobe, raise some funds for a new pair of shoes and support a great charity.

‘We can’t wait to start collecting shoes. We’re looking forward to handing out vouchers, but we are most excited about supporting a fantastic charity which makes such a difference to the lives of so many children and their families. The charity helps to fund itself through a unique recycling operation and the support of donors and fundraisers all over the UK, so this shoe donation drive is really important to us.’

Ian Ward, general manager at The Broadway, adds: ‘It’s a coup for us that schuh has brought this campaign to The Broadway. We are delighted that our shoppers will be able to benefit, and that we will all be able to get behind Newlife and the important work that it does. It goes hand in hand with our own pledge to support Bradford Hospitals Children’s Charity.’

In addition to funding Equipment Grants, offering Emergency Equipment Loans and investing in vital research, Newlife operates a National Nurse Helpline and campaigns for a fairer deal for disabled and terminally ill children to obtain the essential equipment and services they deserve. The charity provides equipment such as wheelchairs, beds, walking frames, seating and communication aids for children across the UK.

There are now around one million children in the UK with significant disabilities. It is believed that the number of disabled children is increasing, as childhood deaths decrease due to improved treatment and management of prematurity, accidents, infections, cancers and inborn conditions.

The Sell Your Soles campaign will run at schuh within The Broadway between 24th February and 26th March.
